Life Thoughts (Sermon Series): Jesus Shows How to Witness

John 4:1-42

How did Jesus Witness and how should I witness?

      1. How did Jesus witness?
        1. Conversation. So binigyan tayo ni Jesus ng napakaganda at effective na example on how to share the gospel. Of course kailangan ng boldness. OF course kailangan ng tapang. Of course kailangang paghandaan. Siguro araw-araw niyang ginagawa yun. Siguro yun yung naka-toka sa kanyang task during that day. And alam ni Jesus yon for sure. At siguro from afar nakita na nya. “ay may dalang water pot si ate. Sakto!” So si Jesus na nakaupo sa may well, sa ilalim ng araw ay syempre nakita din na ateng Samaritan woman. So si Samaritan woman, sabi siguro niya, “ay, may tao. Kukuha din ito ng tubig malamang. Tirik yung araw e.” At doon nagsimula yung conversation….common interest>>>tubig. Pareho silang uhaw. So pareho nilang kailangan yung tubig. Pareho silang andun sa lugar na yun, so for sure pareho din silang kukuha ng tubig.
          1. So ung common need nila during that time at
            1. It was a small talk. Napaka-liit na subject pero yun ang naging springboard ni Jesus to share the gospel to this samaritan woman as we will see later. Kaya sa verse 7 nung sinabi ni Jesus, “give me water.””” boom. Captured attention.
Hala hala. Anong subject paguusapan namin? Anong small talk? Di naman ako uhaw lagi. Pero lagi akong gutom. Pano ako magsisimula mag share ng gospel? Anong una kong sasabihin?
          4. Again, ito isipin natin. They both needed water. At kahit anong urgent need ng tao, gusto niya agad i-address. For example, sabihin nating time yung kailangan. San kayo pumila ng mahaba this week? MRT? SSS? BIR? Bangko? Yung tipong malapit na uminit ulo ng mga tao because they need time. Bilis mag start ng conversations doon diba?
            1. “grabe no ang tagal? Bakit kaya isa lang kahera?”
            2. “malelate na ako. Gusto mo sare nalang tayo sa taxi.”
            3. “dito po ba ung dulo ng pila?”
          5. Boom. Conversation initiated. Diba?
          6. Paano pa yung mas may matinding need? Kulang sa budget? Kailangan ng crying shoulder. Kailangan ng makakakasama. Of course may conversations laging started pag ganon. And this is what Jesus did! Kahit gaano ka-simple yung need, He tried to meet it with His need also during this time….tubig.
          7. And if we talk about the place. Again, sabi ko kanina, sinadya niya yun. So Jesus went to that place intentionally. And then he started a conversation.
            1. For us that’s the best way to evangelize. We go to a place and talk to people.
            2. Or siguro we don’t want to go to a certain place. Pero we can start a conversation in the office. We can start a conversation in school. In v8 sabi>>>>
            3. So maybe magkaraoon ka ng time alone with a friend sa pantry. Start a conversation. Riding an uber? Talk to the driver! Nakatambay sa tindahan? Talk to the tindera! Kung feeling mo lumalim na yung small talk niyo, let me share with 4 simple steps on how to continue a conversation. You just need to remember 4 letters
              1. F – Family
              2. O – occupation
              3. R – Recreation
              4. D – Dreams
            4. And as Jesus went deeper into the conversation with Ateng Samaritan, he kept one thing straight.
        2. Purpose. Jesus had set a purpose at hindi siya sidetracked. Nung lumalim na yung conversation going beyond just the start of the conversation, si ateng Samaritan napansin syempre na Hudyo to e. “Hindi to Samaritano e.” so sa v9 tanong ni ate>>>>
          1. Tapos si Jesus ang sinagot sa v10 ay>>>
          2. Tapos sa 11 and 12 si ate sabi>>>>
          3. Tapos si Jesus sa 13 and 14 sabi>>>
          4. So in essence ginamit ni Jesus na springboard ung conversation nila kanina. Tapos He presented Himself. Sabi ni Jesus kay ate samaritan, “I know what you need!” Jesus presented Himself. He presented the gospel!
          5. You might be thinking. “wow. Intense! Derecho.” yes derecho. Because this was the purpose of Christ. Nung pumunta si Jesus dun at tumambay sa balon, He already has this purpose in mind–to reveal Himself to this Samaritan woman. At sa  conversation nila nag shift yung need from the water (dahil uhaw sila) to the water that will give eternal life. Kaya sabi ni Jesus sa v 14>>>>
          6. Now that is smart! Water is a need. Need. Jesus is what she needs. Water=Jesus. And that is the gospel.
          7. So ate Samaritan continued in v15>>>>
          8. Sabi niya, “give me this water! I need it!” NEEEEEED!
          9. Then v16 sabi ni Jesus>>>>
          10. And sa v17 sabi ni Ate Samaritan, “wala akong asawa.”
          11. At sabi ni Jesus sa v18>>>>
          12. Dito makikita natin how personal Jesus is becoming. Kanina need of the moment lang>>>tubig. But now, Jesus is addressing what ate Samaritan really needs>>>>forgiveness, change….through Him.
          13. Kaya in v25 sabi ni ate samaritan>>>
          14. And Jesus revealed Himslef to her in v26>>> ako ang kailangan mo, ako ang tubig, ako ang buhay na walang hanggan. May sinabi ba si Jesus anything about hell? About heaven? About the other sins she has committed? Wala. Jesus just revealed himself. And that is another confidence we can have.
            1. We have to believe that there is power in the name of Jesus.
            2. Kaya sinabi ni Paul sa Philippians, “at the name of Jesus, every knee will bow!” This is the power of the name of Jesus.
          15. So what happened next? V28>>>>
            1. She left her pot…..
            2. Kanina, yun ang purpose niya for going there. Meron siyang immediate need. Water. Pero on discovering who Jesus is, na-realize niya that she needed more than water. She needed Jesus. Nakita natin how Jesus addressed her immediate need. And turned that need into an eternal need. Kanina pangangailangang simple lang. Pero Jesus transformed that need into a need for eternity.
          16. So here is the principle. It all started with a conversation diba?
            1. Focus on people’s needs. Until they realize that what they really need is greater.
      2. Response of the Samaritan Woman
        1. How did she react?
        2. She had a changed attitude. In v19 sabi niya, “Sir I perceive that You are a prophet.”
          1. When she said the word “perceive” in Greek means–realized. She understood. Naintindihan niya na “parang propeta to a.” And then what happened?
          2. She became open. Naging open siya in talking about spiritual things. In fact siya pa ang nagtatanong. In v20 sabi niya>>>>
          3. She remembered the history of her people. Binalikan niya yung kanyang relihiyon. Kasi yun ang alam niya. And alam niyo, para sa ating mga Pilipino, pag nag share ka ng gospel, tayong mga Pilipino are very religious. Alam natin yan. At gaya ni Ate samaritan, yung taong wwitnessan mo, alam mo, magoopen up din yan. Kasi meron tayong religious background. And kapag nag open up na ang taong yun about his or her religion…san ka pa pupunta? Iderecho mo na.
          4. At yun ang nangyari sa narrative natin. She was open. Jesus transformed her need of water to her need of eternal life. At siya na mismo nagsabi sa v25>>>
          5. And that’s where Jesus revealed Himself. So her attitude changed. And how did she react?
        3. Kahit na wala pa siya masyadong alam about the Gospel, umalis siya, and shared the gospel. Sabi sa v28-30>>>
          1. So anong nangyari? Kasi alam niyo po madadali lang ung veses na kailangan natin imemorize just to share the gospel.
And we also see in the passage, that she won her village to Christ without any training. At naisip ko din that the answer ay ginawani Jesus–she started a conversation. Maybe she talked first. Maybe she got their attention as well. And she was able to lead them to Christ.
      3. So sa atin ngayon, nakita natin how Jesus set an example, and how the Samaritan woman responded–dun sa kanyang pag respond we also learned something. So let me summarize it for you. Based on their examples, I can share the gospel by
        1. Starting a conversation
          1. The small talk can lead to something deeper
        2. Having a purpose
          1. At yung purpose mo should be to center-in on Christ in that conversation. Gagamitin mo lang ung interest and yung lugar to springboard to Christ
        3. Memorizing verses
          1. Nakita natin ito sa samaritan woman. Alam niya yung Scripture. Pero alam niya lang yung mga basic Scripture about the coming of the Messiah. And this shows us what passages we should also memorize to share the gospel to someone.
            1. Jn 3:16
            2. Rom 3:23
            3. Rom 6:23
            4. Etc?
          2. There might be more passages that you think might help. But you don’t need training.
        4. In fact, you have conversations everyday. Diba? You just need to be intentional about the purpose. And back them up with passages that you memorized.
        5. But maybe here you are hearing another preaching on witnessing. Bakit hindi pa rin ginagawa? Kung natatandaan niyo yung huling preaching ko about this, it is fear, always fear na nakakahadlang sa ating pagshshare ng gospel. Because we have barriers.
      4. And according to Bill Bright, may reasons tayo why we don’t witness

  • According to Bill Bright, the first barrier ay nanggagaling when we first mention the name of Jesus Christ and the value of knowing Him.
  • The second barrier comes when we present the gospel. Ito na! Like the example of Jesus, we should have a purpose in our talk. At ito yung purpose. Syempre may nerbyos ng konti. Pero ito yung focus. Ad we really have to say it and allow the Holy Spirit to work in them.
  • The last barrier, asking the person to receive Christ right now, yan ang pinaka mahirap. And many times ako na-reject na when it comes to that. Lagi nilang sinasabi na hindi pa ready, or aayusin nila sarili nila. But this is the most important step. Until we ask the person to trust Christ as his or her Savior and Lord, our witness is not complete. But sometimes it takes time. Pwedeng iplant muna natin yung seed, and then go back to that conversation some time after. But we still want to ask kung if that person wants to receive Christ in his or her life.

But I think that the only way to know how to share the gospel is to go and try. It all starts with a conversation. And this is something we always do. So, let’s start a conversation so we can start sharing the gospel so we can start winning people to Christ.
